Vancity Office of Community Engagement
The Vancity Office of Community Engagement, as part of SFU Woodward's Cultural and Community Program Unit, has initiated several projects in partnership with community organizations. They included:
Introduction to Cultural Democracy
A program for inner-city residents, two sessions were held, the in November 2010 ran for a four-weeks, and the second in March/April 2011 for six-weeks. Each week's session focused on a different topic: Opera, Indian and Japanese classical dance, economic democracy, art and gentrification and urban studies.
Introduction to Citizen Journalism
A successful pilot project, Introduction to Citizen Journalism, was a four-week course done in partnership with Megaphone Magazine, and featured freelance journalists Alex Samur and Jackie Wong. A new six-week session is scheduled to begin in late-October.
Introduction to Contemporary Arts
In partnership with PHS Lifeskills Centre, Introduction to Contemporary Arts was a successful six-week lecture series which ran out of the Interurban Gallery at the corner of Hastings and Carrall Streets in June and July 2011. The artists who participated included Judith Marcuse, Ken Lum, Althea Thauberger, Holly Ward, Ewan MacDonald and Laura Marks.
Social Justice Discussion Series
This series kicked-off on May 17, 2011 with a public discussion entitled Health, Harm, Reduction and the Law, a discussion on the implications of the Supreme Court case related in Insite, Canada's first supervised injection site. Done in partnership with Pivot Legal Society.

INDIAN SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL 2011
The Indian Summer Arts Festival, held at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts this past July, included an interactive Literature Series with notable authors from both India and Canada. The Literature Series events were taped and can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

In celebration of 50 years of protecting and promoting civil liberties, the BC Civil Liberties Association is proud to present a day-long speakers series featuring leading human rights and civil liberties advocates from across Canada speaking on the state of freedom and democracy today.
This event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10-35 to help us continue to host events like this. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
