Goldcorp Centre for the Arts Community Endowment
In 2010, Goldcorp partnered with SFU to establish the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts and to create the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts Community Endowment. The Goldcorp Centre for the Arts Community Endowment, established with a $5 million donation, will support SFU community programs that benefit the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood and broader artistic community.
In the first year, the Goldcorp Endowment Fund will support local hiring, youth arts programming and partnerships, community arts collaborations, accessible arts education programs, public forums and dialogues, ticket and venue subsidies, and accessibility to credit and non-credit courses at SFU.
Since opening its doors in September 2010, the SFU Woodward's Cultural Unit, as part of its mandate, has already initiated several community oriented programs that exemplify what Goldcorp’s endowment will support including:
-
Community Arts Presentations
- Bah Humbug - a creative retelling of a Christmas Carol with a community theme and with the support of professional and community actors
- A dance workshop with Canadian dancer Margie Gillis
- Ghosts of Violence ballet, a partnership with the We Can Coalition of BC
-
Public forums and dialogues
- A range of accessible non-credit arts-related courses for inner city residents
- Numerous talks, discussions, and dialogues on social and artistic topics with free public admission
-
A community ticketing program
- In 2010 SFU gave hundreds of tickets to community members to allow them to attend a broad range of performances, seminars, public forums, and dialogues.
- Venue subsidies
Working with local groups, this endowment will subsidize the venue costs to allow presentations and co-presentations with external arts organizations.
